Description

  • 18th century (1703) cradle-shaped tombstone. Belongs to Kirakos, son of Avanes (Armenian Lapidary, Pr. 4, № 960 inscription).

Front side. This large, finely carved tombstone presents a scene of the “eternal feast.” The deceased is depicted on horseback. To the right of his figure is the horizontal image of a plate, and below it a jar and a goblet. Two figures with hands placed on their waists appear to be dancing. On the table are three similar wine jars, and the scene concludes with a musician playing the kamancha. All the figures are arranged around a lavish banquet table laden with food. The composition is framed by an inscription.

Back side. Cross motifs beneath four arches, which, like tombstone 04-02, are supplemented below with two additional crosses each. The northern face is bordered with a braided band. Based on the style of the crosses and the overall artistic language, this tombstone appears to have been made by the same master as tombstones 04-2 and 05-1.

    Lateral sides. Empty.

    Upper side. Concave, without ornamentation.
