Geghhovit tapanakar 05-2
Description
- Late 17th century (1671) cradle-shaped tombstone, large in size. Belongs to Nerses, son of Tanuter Ghukas (Armenian Lapidary, Pr. 4, № 945 inscription).
Front side. The deceased is depicted holding the reins of his horse with one hand and receiving a loaf marked with the symbol of eternity with the other. The facial features and head adornment of the deceased are rendered with notable care. Two additional figures appear: one holds a wine jar in one hand and a loaf in the other, while the second plays the saz. Below these figures, the sculptor most likely carved a banquet table laden with food, though it now remains buried beneath soil. The inscription frames the composition.
Back side. Cross motifs within three arches, enclosed by a braided border.
Lateral sides. On one side only, a cross decorated below with palm branches.
Upper side. Empty.
