Description
- 17th century (1663) cradle-shaped tombstone with concave upper side, large in size. Belongs to Aleksan, whose father Zakare erected this holy cross as an intercessor for his son (Armenian Lapidary, Pr. 4, № 941 inscription).
Front side. The deceased horseman holds the reins of his horse. Directly below him is a smaller youth with hands placed on his waist. Two more figures complete the scene: one extends a loaf toward the deceased while holding a jar in the other hand, and the second is a musician. Notably, the banquet table laden with food is absent in this composition. The scene is framed with an inscription carved in raised, elegant letters.
Back side. On the northern face, beneath a triple arch, are finely detailed cross motifs. From the central cross hang clusters of grapes, while the side crosses are decorated below with palm branches. The composition is bordered with a beautiful braided pattern.
Lateral sides. Beneath a single arch is a cross, decorated below with palm branches.
Upper side. Empty.
