Description

  • Late 17th century (1691) cradle-shaped tombstone, large in size. Belongs to Melikpek, son of Elchi (Armenian Lapidary, Pr. 4, № 930 inscription).

Front side. The scene begins with the image of the deceased horseman, above whose head a rifle is depicted. Beside the horse is a wine jar, followed by a figure with hands placed on his waist. To the right of this figure are again a wine jar and a goblet, and the scene concludes with a musician. According to S. Barkhudaryan’s description, the figure with hands on the waist is shown dancing, and beneath these figures was once a table laden with food, which today remains buried under soil. The head adornments of all three figures are noteworthy, and the sculptor conveyed their facial features with simple but effective means. The inscription frames the entire scene.

Back side. Under four arches are similar cross motifs, decorated below with palm branches. The composition is enclosed within a fine ornamental band.

    Lateral and upper sides. Empty.
