Geghhovit tapanakar 18
Description
- 17th century (1660) cradle-shaped tombstone, large in size. Belongs to Sarukhan, son of Gharaykhan (Armenian Lapidary, Pr. 4, № 925 inscription).
Front side. The southern carved surface presents a hunting scene. A crowned mounted hunter, armed with a rifle, a quiver of arrows, and a bow, pursues a fleeing ibex. Beneath the horse’s hooves coils a dragon-serpent. The scene continues with musicians, one playing the qanun and the other the saz. It is further enriched with two jars of different forms, a round table laden with food, a book, and another musical instrument. The final figure holds a cup or loaf in one hand and places the other on his waist. The entire scene is enclosed in a fine braided ornament, with the inscription in a single line across the upper band.
Back side. Under four arches are various cross motifs, decorated in their lower parts with palm branches. The composition is framed with a wide braided ornament band.
Lateral sides. Beneath a pointed arch is a crowned cross with trefoil lobes; on the opposite side, an eagle grasping a lamb in its talons.
Upper side. Empty.
