Description

  • Cradle-shaped, large-sized tombstone with a concave top, 18th century (1711). The tombstone belongs to Yohan, son of Tanuter Ghasum (Armenian Lapidary, Vol. 4, No. 973, inscription).

Front side. The carved surface depicts the mounted deceased playing the saz (long-necked string instrument), with a deer and a bezoar goat in front of him. In the upper right section, the sculptor presents a beautifully stylized cross, followed by musical instruments. The lower band contains four figures: one playing the qanun, another playing the saz, a dancer with hands on the waist, and the last figure, positioned between a wine jug and a cup, shown only partially. According to S. Barkhudaryan’s description, a bread table was also carved, but it is no longer visible today as it lies beneath soil coverage.

Back side. Beneath five arches are cross designs, four of which each have two additional simple crosses below. The inscription frames the north face.

Lateral sides. Only one side bears a cross enclosed within an arch.

    Upper side. Empty.
