Description

  • 16th century (1552) cradle-shaped tombstone with concave upper side, large in size. Belongs to Mkhtiar, son of Murat (Armenian Lapidary, Pr. 4, № 911 inscription).

Front side. On the northern carved face is presented a synthesized scene combining elements of the “eternal feast” and hunting. Before the saz-playing musician, to the left, are the integral objects of the feast: jars and pitchers of various sizes and shapes, a round table laden with food, a plate, and a loaf of bread. A hunter in a pointed hat, with a quiver of arrows slung over his shoulder, aims his drawn bow at a deer and a goat. The next figure is a horseman, holding a small dagger, its sheath hanging at his side. His face is poorly preserved, breaking out of the composition and interrupting the inscription that occupies the upper frame. The lower band is bordered with acanthus ornament.

Back side. Under five columned arches are finely worked cross motifs. The capitals and bases of the arches are rendered in detail. The free spaces between the arches are filled with leaf-shaped patterns. The lower band repeats the acanthus ornament of the northern face.

Lateral sides. On the western side is the symbol of eternity, below which are letters of the date ‘TV RA’ (1552), with the lower section decorated with acanthus ornament. On the eastern side, beneath an arch, is a powerful cross, supplemented below with two simple crosses. In the upper band is part of an inscription that was not deciphered by the lapidary scholar S. Barkhudaryan, and above it three simple linear crosses. The lower band is again filled with acanthus ornament.

    Upper side. Convex, without ornamentation.
