Torfavan 02
Description
16th century (1564) cradle-shaped tombstone belonging to Azizbek. The Holy Cross was erected by Mkrtich, son of Shahik (Armenian Lapidary, Pr. 4, № 1497 inscription). This tombstone and Torfavan 03 belong to the same family.
Front side. The northern carved surface again presents a hunting scene. A deer and a small wild goat are entangled between two intertwined dragon-serpents. In the right corner of the scene stands the mounted deceased, shown with an unusual head adornment and a raised sword in hand. The right and left corners contain fan-shaped ornamental openings. Three edges of the composition are bordered with a large meander pattern, while the lower edge bears a geometric–vegetal ornament band, in one corner of which the sculptor skillfully concealed a human face.
Back side. On the southern face, four pointed arches contain stylized cross motifs. The border repeats that of the northern face, giving the composition a decorative and symmetrical appearance.
Lateral sides. The eastern side preserves a seven-line inscription, while the western bears a stylized cross motif rendered in detailed workmanship.
Upper side. Concave surface, outlined at the center, with vegetal ornament and the image of a wild goat carved along the edge on both sides.
