Torfavan 10
Description
Front side. The carved surface is conventionally divided into two sections, each representing a way of overcoming death: through the symbolic elements of the eternal feast and through the scene of slaying death, embodied by paired dragons. Around the deceased, shown seated cross-legged and wearing a three-lily crown, are carved a mace-like object, a table laden with food, a bowl, and a jar. The next part of the composition depicts a riderless horse struggling against two dragons. The dragons are shown with open jaws and protruding tongues, one of their tails pressed beneath the horse’s hooves. The scene is enclosed within a delicate ornamental band.
Back side. Within four columned arcades are cross motifs, the lower sections decorated with palm-leaf ornament.
Lateral sides. One side bears a cross enclosed in a rectangular frame, while the other is without ornamentation.
Upper side. Concave, with only a single outlining line preserved at the edge.
